# Assign a Value from a Prior Rule

Values that have been created in data assignment rules previously are available along with the data in the data views.

In this example, we will use the 'currency' value from the request step to populate the 'account\_currency' field in the response step.

To begin, select the step and field on the main 'Assignment Rules' page and create a rule container. Click 'Compose' in the Operands page to open the Rules page.

In the left hand pane (Sources) the step(s) will be shown below the data views. Here, we will select 'request\_step' and then the 'account\_currency' field from that step in the center pane (Attributes). Once the field name populates in the right hand pane, click the blue plus sign to move it to the Operands section in the lower pane. Click the 'Save' button to save the rule.

## Querying This Documentation
If you need additional information that is not directly available in this page, you can query the documentation dynamically by asking a question.

Perform an HTTP GET request on the current page URL with the `ask` query parameter, and the optional `goal` query parameter:

```
GET https://docs.apica.io/platform-docs/test-data-orchestrator-tdo/user-documentation/tdo-project-builder-user-guide/data-assignment/assign-a-value-from-a-prior-rule.md?ask=<question>&goal=<endgoal>
```

`ask` is the immediate question: it should be specific, self-contained, and written in natural language.
`goal` is optional and describes the broader end goal you are ultimately trying to accomplish on behalf of the user. GitBook uses it to tailor the answer towards what is most useful for that goal.

The response will contain a direct answer to the question and relevant excerpts and sources from the documentation.

Use this mechanism when the answer is not explicitly present in the current page, you need clarification or additional context, or you want to retrieve related documentation sections.
